The Castle of Santa Barbara is located at the top of Mount Benacantil, 166 meters above sea level. It is one of the largest medieval fortresses in Spain, from which you can perfectly see the bay of Alicante.
It has three enclosures at different heights and from three different periods:
In the highest enclosure ("La Torreta") are the Torre del Homenaje and the oldest remains of the fortress, dating mostly from the 14th century.
In the middle enclosure are located the most important rooms that were built in the sixteenth century such as:
- The Philip II Hall
- The Guard Corps
- The Weapons Courtyard
- The Queen's Bastion.
The lower enclosure dates from the eighteenth century and it is located in the so-called Revellín del Bon Repós.
Access to the fortress is FREE.
